RESILIENCE

Psychological resilience refers to the ability to respond to stressful life events emotionally, mentally, and physically, but also the ability to bounce back and grow in the face of adversity. The MHFA pays great attention to helping the community foster resilience. One of our main resilience building programs is our Schools Program and COVID-19 materials.

SCHOOLS PROGRAM

In 2020, MHFA developed a one-hour Mental Health and Wellbeing Seminar to be delivered to young and senior primary school students and to secondary school students. The Foundation’s aim in setting up this program was to reach as many school children as possible with the purpose of promoting mental health resilience and education, equipping students with the confidence and skills to better look after their mental health, alongside assisting schools to create a safer, more inclusive environment in which students feel comfortable addressing their mental health struggles. The program was designed to be free of charge to the school, with time and location flexible to suit the school’s needs.

We began by contacting as many schools as possible to promote the free program, both in rural and metropolitan areas. The Foundation designed a presentation not only for high schools, but also an interactive and age appropriate presentation for primary school students.

We wanted to ensure that we were providing accessible education to students of all ages, as it is the belief of the organisation that learning about mental health in an appropriate setting early in life is crucial for improving mental health literacy, and reducing the considerable stigma that still surrounds mental health.
